Free Typing Practice for Your Classroom
Step-by-step touch typing lessons, typing games and a 1-minute typing test, free for every student. No sign-up and no student accounts: share a link in Google Classroom or Teams and your class can start typing straight away.
No sign-up, no student accounts
Students open a link and start typing. You don't create a class or manage passwords, and students never enter an email address.
Step-by-step lessons
22 short lessons teach touch typing two keys at a time, from the home row to numbers, capitals and punctuation. Each one shows which finger to use.
Games students actually want to play
Falling Words, Typing Asteroids, Word Builder and more turn practice into a challenge, so the last ten minutes of class run themselves.
Works on school Chromebooks
Everything runs in the browser, with nothing to install. Lessons work best with a physical keyboard, so tablets need one attached.
A 6-Week Typing Plan
One unit a week, with a couple of short sessions per week, takes a class from the home row to the whole keyboard. Students who finish early move ahead on their own.
A 15-Minute Class Session
Short, regular practice builds typing skill faster than long, occasional sessions. This routine fits at the start or end of a lesson:
- 2 minHands on home rowStudents place their fingers on ASDF and JKL; and find the bumps on F and J without looking.
- 8 minNext lessonEach student continues from their own lesson. A lesson passes at 90% accuracy, so slower typists aren't rushed.
- 4 minA typing gameFalling Words or Typing Asteroids, to practice speed under a little pressure.
- 1 minSpeed checkOnce a week, a 1-minute typing test. Students write down their WPM and accuracy to track their progress.
Typing Speed Goals by Grade
Typical speeds with regular practice. Accuracy matters more than speed at first: aim for 90% or better before pushing for WPM. See the typing speed chart for more detail.
Grades 3–5
15–25 WPM
Grades 6–8
25–40 WPM
Grades 9–12
40–60 WPM
Questions from Teachers
Is it really free for schools?▾
Yes. Every lesson, game and test is free, for any number of students. The site is supported by ads, which are kept away from the typing areas.
Do students need an account or an email address?▾
No. Students open the link and start typing. Progress, test results and settings are saved in the browser on the device they use, not in an account.
What student data does the site collect?▾
Students never enter an email address, and the site has no accounts. A name is only typed if a student creates a certificate, and the certificate is made in their browser. Like most websites, the site uses Google Analytics and Google AdSense, which use cookies. The privacy policy has the details, so check it against your school's rules before assigning the site.
Can I see my students' progress?▾
There is no teacher dashboard, because there are no accounts. Students can show you their lesson progress and results on their own device, or download a typing certificate with their name and speed and submit it as an assignment.
Does progress save on shared or school computers?▾
Progress is saved in the browser profile on each device. On Chromebooks where each student signs in, every student keeps their own progress. On shared computers with one profile, students share it, and clearing the browser data resets it.
What age is it suitable for?▾
Most students can start around age 7 or 8, when their hands can comfortably reach the home row. The lessons start from finger placement, so they work for older beginners too.
