Checked November 2026. Monkeytype changes often, so see monkeytype.com for its latest features.
Lessons go row by row, with a finger guide for every key, then a key drill to lock it in.
Start the lessons →Every session is tracked key by key. Keys and key pairs you miss most turn into short focus drills.
See your weak keys →Finish a typing test of 30 seconds or more and download a certificate at your real speed.
Get a certificate →Catch falling words in a rainy city, shoot asteroids, build words, type code or race a friend.
Play typing games →If you already touch type and mostly want to chase a higher score, Monkeytype is hard to beat. It has far more themes, test modes and languages, plus public leaderboards and an account that keeps your history on any device.
Pick The Typing Practice if you want to get faster, not just measure your speed: learn the home row with the typing lessons, practice a few minutes a day toward a daily goal on the practice page, and let your weak keys tell you what to work on next. Many people use both.
Your speed is net WPM: correct characters divided by 5, per minute. Accuracy is right key presses out of all key presses, so a mistake you fix with Backspace still counts. Every typing screen on the site scores the same way, so a result in practice and a result in the typing test mean the same thing.
Scores move a little from site to site, since each one counts mistakes and picks words differently. To see how your speed compares with other typists and with what jobs ask for, check the typing speed chart.
Both are free typing sites with a clean timed test that works without an account. Monkeytype focuses on the test itself and lets you customize almost everything about it. The Typing Practice adds touch typing lessons, weak key drills, typing games and a free certificate around its typing test.
Monkeytype doesn't offer certificates. On The Typing Practice you can take a 1, 2 or 5 minute typing test and download a free certificate with your name, WPM, accuracy and a certificate ID, as a PDF or PNG or as a share link.
Sites count speed in slightly different ways: some count only words typed fully correct, some count every correct character, and some subtract errors. Test length and the words used matter too. On The Typing Practice, WPM is net WPM: correct characters divided by 5, per minute. Accuracy is right key presses out of all key presses, so a mistake you fix still counts as a mistake.
If you are still looking at the keyboard, start with lessons that teach where each finger goes. Monkeytype has no lessons, while The Typing Practice has free touch typing lessons and focus drills for the keys you miss most.
